What B2B lead generation through cold email looks like for South African companies

Cold email lead generation means sending a short, relevant message to a defined list of business buyers and handling the replies that come back. Done well, it is a steady source of conversations with people you could not otherwise reach.

For a South African company, the work is the same as anywhere, with one difference: the rules. Local marketing law and the laws of the countries you sell into both matter, and we cover them below. If you want the broader picture first, see our B2B lead generation service.

Who it suits

Our service pages are written for B2B SaaS, automation and services companies that want pipeline without hiring an outreach team. It fits best when:

  • You sell to businesses, with a buyer you can name by job title.
  • You sell locally, or export to buyers in markets such as the US and UK.
  • You want the infrastructure, lists and sequences handled for you, and your team focused on the calls.

If your buyers are consumers, or you cannot describe who you want to reach, cold email is the wrong tool. Our readiness quiz is a quick way to check.

What you get

Sending infrastructure

Dedicated sending domains, authenticated with SPF, DKIM and DMARC, with mailboxes warmed up before real volume goes out.

List sourcing

Contacts sourced against the customer profile we agree with you, then verified before they enter a sequence.

Sequencing

Copy and follow-ups written for your offer and audience, tested against each other rather than pulled from a template.

AI-qualified replies

Every reply is classified by AI, and qualified replies are routed to your inbox or CRM so noise never reaches you.

The full scope is on our done-for-you cold email service page.

How the pricing works

The model has two parts. The sending infrastructure, such as domains, mailboxes and tools, is billed at cost. On top of that, you pay a fee for each qualified reply.

A qualified reply is a real person who has replied with genuine interest. It is not an auto-responder, an out-of-office note or a request to be removed. You are not billed for noise.

We do not list prices on this page, because the infrastructure cost depends on the volume you need. Book a call and we will show you exactly how the numbers work for your setup. You can also model your own outcomes with the free ROI calculator.

Cold email and POPIA: what section 69 says

South Africa's Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) governs direct marketing by electronic message in section 69. In summary, the text of section 69 says:

  • Processing personal information for direct marketing by electronic communication, including email, is prohibited unless the person has consented or the existing-customer conditions are met.
  • Consent may be requested only once, and not from someone who has previously refused.
  • Every message must identify the sender and give an address or contact detail to stop receiving messages.

The Information Regulator has also issued a Guidance Note on Direct Marketing, which a DLA Piper summary describes as advisory. That note does not settle how these rules apply to business recipients, and neither does the section text we reviewed.

This is general information, not legal advice. Whether a campaign is lawful depends on who you contact and how, so speak to a South African attorney before you launch. Our guide on whether cold email is legal goes through the rules by country.

Selling to US and UK buyers from South Africa

If you export, the rules of the buyer's country apply to the email. Two basics, with the detail in our legal guide:

  • United States. The FTC's CAN-SPAM guide requires accurate header information, honest subject lines, a valid physical postal address and a clear opt-out that you honor within 10 business days. Hiring another company to send does not transfer your responsibility.
  • United Kingdom. The ICO's business-to-business marketing guidance says the PECR consent rule for email marketing does not apply to corporate subscribers, but sole traders and some partnerships are treated as individuals.

Rules change, so check the current guidance before you send.

How we compare with local appointment setting and outsourced SDRs

There are three common ways to get outbound running: an appointment-setting firm, an outsourced or in-house SDR, or a managed cold email service. Terms vary a lot between providers, so compare on the contract, not the label.

Whichever route you take, ask:

  • What exactly counts as a billable result, and who decides?
  • Who owns the domains, mailboxes and contact data if you leave?
  • What do you pay if nothing lands?
  • Which channels are used, and who is accountable for compliance?

A managed cold email service differs from a phone-based team in channel and cost structure: it runs on email infrastructure, so volume is cheap to scale, and in our model the fee follows qualified replies. It does not replace a closer. You still take the calls. If you want email, phone and LinkedIn together, see our multi-touch outreach service.

Frequently asked questions

Is cold email legal in South Africa?

It is not a simple yes or no. POPIA section 69 restricts unsolicited electronic direct marketing to cases where the person has consented or the existing-customer conditions are met, and every message must identify the sender and give a way to opt out. The sources we reviewed do not settle how this applies to business recipients, so take advice from a South African attorney.

How much does B2B lead generation cost in South Africa?

It depends on the model. With Realtrix you pay for the sending infrastructure at cost, plus a fee for each qualified reply, rather than a flat retainer. Because the fee follows results, cost moves with what you receive. Book a call and we will walk through the figures for your setup.

What is pay per lead generation?

Pay per lead means you are charged for each lead delivered instead of a monthly retainer. The catch is the definition of a lead. Ask what counts, who decides, and whether an auto-reply or a refusal is billed. At Realtrix a qualified reply is a real person who has replied with genuine interest.

How long until I get replies?

We do not promise a fixed date. New domains and mailboxes are warmed up gradually before volume is added, so a launch is staged rather than instant. Replies begin once sending starts, and we agree a launch plan with you on the call, based on your list and your offer.

Do you work with companies outside South Africa?

Yes. Realtrix is based in South Africa and serves B2B SaaS and automation companies worldwide. We also run campaigns from South Africa to buyers in other markets, such as the US and UK, where different rules apply to the email itself.
